Maple Privacy Policy

Introduction

The Government of Manitoba ("Manitoba"), through Manitoba Education, has developed the Manitoba Professional Learning Environment web site (Maple), an online educational community for Manitoba educators that provides access to resources, professional learning services and opportunities for collaboration and interaction.

The following Privacy Notice and the Terms of Use govern the operation and management of the Maple web site. Please ensure you carefully review this Privacy Notice and the Terms of Use before proceeding.

If you do not wish to use Maple or do not consent to the collection, use and disclosure of personal information about you or to the Terms of Use, as explained in the “Consent” section, do not log into the Maple web site.

What Personal Information Manitoba Collects, and How We Use and Disclose It

Automatically Collected when you visit our web site

When you visit our web site, Manitoba’s web server automatically collects the following personal information about you:

  • your internet protocol (IP) address,
  • your domain name,
  • your operating system,
  • your browser type,
  • the date and time of your visit,
  • the pages you visit on this web site and length of visit to each page, and
  • your general geographic location.

This information is collected

  • for the purposes of trouble-shooting and error location, and

Collected when you use Maple

If you choose to become a member of Maple, Manitoba will also collect the following personal information when you provide it:

  • your name
  • your email address

  • for the purpose of creating and providing you with a user name so that you may log onto the Maple website

If you log onto the Maple web site, Manitoba will also collect the personal information that you provide for your profile, if you choose to have a profile on the website. Examples of personal information that you may choose to provide for your profile are:

  • a thumbnail photograph of you
  • a long and short description about your professional experience and your professional interests
  • the name of the school and school division where you work
  • the grade and subjects that you teach
  • your other email addresses or e-contact information, such as Hotmail, Skype, Facebook, etc.

The information in your profile will be viewed by other Maple users on the Maple website and will support the collaborative aspect of the network.

If you participate on the Maple web site, Manitoba will also collect the following personal information when you provide it:

  • feedback, professional views
  • comments, discussion items

This information will be viewed by other Maple users and will support the collaborative aspect of the network.

In respect of any information that you provide to Manitoba, you must provide accurate and complete information and must provide changes to the information, if any, in a timely manner. You may be subject to penalties or fines for providing false or inaccurate information.

Manitoba’s Legal Authority to Collect Your Information

The collection of your personal information is necessary for Manitoba to provide you with an opportunity to become a member of Maple. Your personal information is being collected by Manitoba under the authority of clause 36(1)(b) of The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (Manitoba), (“FIPPA”) as it is necessary for and directly related to the Maple service.

Manitoba limits the personal information it collects about you to the minimum amount necessary for the purposes of the Maple service, as described above.

Your personal information is protected by Manitoba under FIPPA. Manitoba cannot use or disclose your information for other purposes unless you consent or Manitoba is authorized to do so by FIPPA.

How your Personal Information is Protected

Manitoba’s collection of your personal information is done in a way that keeps the information secure. The personal information that you provide to Manitoba is encrypted by Secure Sockets layer (SSL), an advanced security system, before it travels to this web site. Manitoba stores your personal information on secure servers and has integrated other security measures to protect the personal information collected by Manitoba.

Consent to the Collection, Use and Disclosure of your Personal Information and to the Terms of Use

By accessing this web site and by logging onto the Maple web site and becoming a member of Maple, you consent to Manitoba’s collection, use and disclosure of your personal information as described above and to Maple’s Terms of Use.

Withdrawal of your Consent to the collection, use and disclosure of your personal information or the Terms of Use

You may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting the person named below. On the withdrawal of your consent, Manitoba will remove your personal information from the Maple web site, and you will no longer be a member of Maple and will no longer be eligible to receive the Maple service.
